Madonna dell' Avvocata
A mix of paganism and Christianity
On the Monday after Pentecost, Mount Falerzio, which rises to 1000m in height on the eastern side of Maiori, becomes a pilgrimage destination.
On this day and the days that follow, locals celebrate the feast of the Madonna dell’ Avvocata.
The celebration of this feast is considered particularly important in Maiori and throughout the Amalfi Coast but also in Cava dè Tirreni and in the surrounding lowlands of the Agro Nocerino Sarnese area.
This centuries old tradition combines elements of paganism and Christianity and keeps alive a very strong ritual which finds its maximum expression in the ‘tammurriata’.
The tammurriata is an archaic dance that is accompanied throughout by the rhythm of tambourines.
